Alexandra Saunders

Alexandra Saunders is a contemporary oil painter steeped in the tradition of realism and celebrated for her ability to merge intimate portraits in nature with emotional depth. Her work captures fleeting moments—light, reflections, shadows, and hyper-realism—that challenge the viewer to enter the world they are looking at and dive beneath the surface.

“My art is about the magic that surrounds us—calling out to be seen, to be noticed and to be cherished. Through light, patterns, and silence, I try to coax people in to my canvases to rediscover these wonders.

Alexandra's creative process is rooted in observation, patience, time, and stillness. Each collection reflects a quiet presence that invites wonder. Her work has been showcased in private collections across North America and Asia.

"TO CREATE IS TO LISTEN—TO NATURE, TO STILLNESS, AND TO THE Sacred SPACES BETWEEN. I INVITE YOU TO LISTEN WITH ME."

MEET THE ARTIST

“I create intimate portraits to offer viewers more than just a glimpse—I want them to step into the painting, to feel the energy, the silence, and the pulse of the moment as I did when capturing it.”

My oil paintings are deeply rooted in realism, inviting me to fully immerse myself in the subject. When I paint, I disappear into the moment—feeling, thinking, and questioning every detail: how a muscle moves, how hair lies upon it, how an animal might be feeling or what it could be thinking. Although I often begin with a planned composition and structure, once I establish the values and atmospheric setting, I allow the painting to guide me intuitively. My creative process balances careful observation with the soulful act of applying paint to canvas.

The selection of my subject matter is deliberate and patient. I spend countless hours studying photographs of animals until one seizes my attention and compels me to envision translating it into paint. This decision is often sparked by the light and how it interacts with the animal, highlighting textures and contours. More than that, it is the emotion I experience when encountering a particular animal that draws me into a scene and invites me to explore it more deeply.

My inspiration stems from the intricate textures of life—the hair, fur, skin, nails, bones and spirit that define each individual. Imagining drawing these textures pulls me into the painting process, urging me to capture the essence of a specific animal.

My technique is characterized by the completion of many layers over extended periods. I build color, form, and light gradually, often adding, subtracting, and adding again. Throughout this process, I step back frequently to view the work from a distance, constantly observing, reflecting, and challenging myself to improve the painting. This method, grounded in time and patience, allows the work to evolve organically and ultimately brings forth something unique and true to the subject.

Through the interplay of light, shadow, and form, Alexandra's artworks reveal hidden dimensions, challenging us to see not just the world, but our place within it, differently. Each piece becomes a window into another perspective, offering collectors and viewers an experience that lingers long after the moment has passed.

THE PROCESS

Bringing an idea to life through art begins long before the first stroke is made.

Inspiration can strike in the smallest of moments—a shadow dancing across a wall, the texture of weathered stone, or the quiet stillness of dawn. For Julian Arlen, the process is one of observation and patience, waiting for the right alignment of light, emotion, and space.

Every composition is a deliberate act, balancing form and feeling. Whether behind the lens or standing before a canvas, Julian crafts pieces that invite reflection and connection. These works become more than visual—they become experiences that resonate deeply, offering viewers a chance to pause, feel, and rediscover the beauty hidden in the everyday.
