THE PROCESS

My Paintings Begin with Wonder, and Come Alive Through Listening

My process begins when I am drawn in by the beauty and wonder of an animal, a moment of connection that sparks a story I want to tell.

From there, I place the subject I am painting into a setting that reflects the narrative I envision, creating an environment that feels as integral to the story as the subject itself.

But the journey doesn’t end there.

I stop, observe, and listen—allowing time for the painting to reveal itself to me, to speak in its own quiet way. This phase of reflection is crucial, as I wait for the subtle guidance that tells me what the piece needs, and how I can bring it to life over time.

It’s a dance of patience, intuition, observation, and a deep respect for nuances of light and matter that are revealed in the unfolding process.

MEET THE ARTIST

Alexandra Saunders

I'm a contemporary artist whose oil paintings reflect my lifelong devotion to the natural world. Raised in Java, Indonesia, I was introduced at an early age to incredible wonders in lush rainforests surrounded by wildlife. These experiences shaped my love for nature, influencing my academic path, career choices, and ultimately, my art.

I earned a B.S. in Conservation of Natural Resources from the University of California, Berkeley, where I was honored with a Lawrence National Laboratories Fellowship to pursue my graduate studies in Wildland Resource Conservation, with a focus on orangutans and rainforest ecosystems.

After a career in science, non-profits & business wearing many hats, I returned to my first love —science & art — utilizing my science background and conservation ethic intoto create evocative wildlife portraits in 2021.

In 2023, I was honored with Signature Membership and the Medal of Excellence from Artists for Conservation.

My art is a voice for the jewels of our planet. Proceeds from the sales of my works are donated to organizations fighting wildlife trafficking and habitat loss.

“My art is both a love letter and a call to action. Each painting is my attempt to capture the spirit and vulnerability of species we stand to lose. By painting these animals with empathy and presence, I hope to remind us of our shared responsibility to cherish & protect them. Art allows me to merge science with soul — to tell stories that spark the imagination and show our fragility and hope.”

Alexandra's creative process is rooted in observation and stillness.

"TO CREATE IS TO LISTEN—TO NATURE, TO STILLNESS, AND TO THE Sacred SPACES BETWEEN. I INVITE YOU INTO OUR NATURAL WORLD TO LISTEN WITH ME."
