When I first envisioned Quiet Majesty, I wasn’t simply trying to paint a cougar — I was trying to honor the experience of meeting a creature that so rarely allows itself to be seen. I have a good friend In Ecuador who purchased and protects a special Cloud Forest which feeds into the Amazon. And it was through his camera traps that he was able to capture the images of this beautiful female cougar who lives in this cloud forest .

She's a master of silence, moving through her world like a shadow, present but hidden.

My intention was to strip away that distance and bring you into an intimate space with her, where her presence could be felt as something alive, immediate, and deeply personal.

I began with her eyes, because that is where I felt her story lived. Those luminous green eyes became a focal point — quiet, intelligent, alert, and watchful. They carry both the mystery of the wild and the undeniable sense of being seen in return. Around them, I layered warm earth tones, building depth into the fur and muscle to give the animal weight and substance, not as a symbol of wilderness, but as a living being.

The muted background was intentional. I wanted nothing to compete with her presence. By softening the surrounding space, I created a calm, atmospheric stillness, almost like a breath held in reverence. It allows the her strength and grace to emerge without distraction, revealing a tension that is not about aggression or dominance, but about poise — the kind of power that exists in quiet readiness.

For me, this painting became less about portraying a big cat and more about revealing resilience, instinct, beauty, and presence. It’s about the power of stillness, the dignity of this creature that does not need to announce herself.

My hope is that, as you look into her portrait you feel invited into that hidden world — not as an intruder, but as a witness to the sacred silence of the wild.
